The Spring 2013 issue of Motor Trend Classic is out on newstands and it was a great find to read a feature on Soichiro Honda’s last genius creation before hitting retirement in 1972 with his company!
Myron Vernis, contributor to Hemmings.com and manager of the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio recently got together with Motor Trend to show off his hugely rare Honda 1300 Coupe 9. Sporting (2) coupe 9’s in his collection and the only (2) known to exist in the US, there is some beautiful pictures in this issue to gawk at!
The Coupe 7’s & 9’s, produced from ’69-73, were exclusive to the Asian markets & Australia with no European or US release. Soichiro himself oversaw the entire project and engine design with it’s unique 1299cc, air-cooled & dry-sump 4 cylinder engine deriving it’s roots from Honda’s F1 R&D. Cranking out an impressive 116hp for it’s unique design, the coupes exhaust note is not to be taken lightly.
Vernis’s coupe looks strangely familiar to Jalopnik & Bring-a-trailer.com followers who have read previous articles in 2008/2009 when a ’71 1300 coupe in the US was for sale. What gets us is the difference in years. You agree?
Currently there is no link on Motor Trend’s website to the feature, but will be sure to update when it is posted. For now, go check out the gorgeous Coupe 9 in Motor Trend’s spring issue and let us know what you think with your comments below!
